The Department of English of Tamulpur College came into existence in the year 1993. At the initial stage, the department offered General English and Alternative English courses under ‘Three Year Degree Course’ (TDC) of Gauhati University. Later, in the year 2017, to cater the needs and increasing demand of the students, the department has opened the window for honours in English under Bodoland University and got Major permission in the Academic Sesson 2023-24. The department has always focused on the enhancement of students’ skills to develop their communicative competence in English along with its primary task of training them to get emerged in English studies such as language, literature and literary theories. Besides enhancing the language-literacy (listening, speaking, reading and writing), the faculties strive to facilitate holistic development of its students to be critical thinker and make them potential assets for the nation. The department is committed to give the quality education and persistently works to achieve its goal for the large interest of the society. At present, the department has four full time dedicated Assistant Professors.
Programme:
The department offers courses based on CBCS under Bodoland University that aims to bridge an increasing gap between an undergraduate degree and employability. The prescribed syllabus covers a wide range of domain in English studies that ranges from Indian Classical Literature to Modern Indian Writing in English, European Classical Literature to Modern European Literature, British Literature, Literary Theory and Criticism, Postcolonial Literatures, World Literatures, Translation Studies, English Language and Linguistics etc.
Facilities:
At present, the College Library has about 350 course text books, references and question bank. Any student or teacher having interest in English literature/language can access the books in the library and issue the books to facilitate in their academic career.
